On the August Bank Holiday Monday an Old Hymerians U21’s Side competed in the Cronk-Cunis National Public Old Boys Tournament down in Richmond, London. A young side, predominately this years leavers were promoted into the Cup Tournament from the Bowl Competition on arrival to the ground and faced the Old Boy’s from Brighton College.

The brought forward first kick off time hindered the squads warm up however they competed very well against a well organised Brighton team. An early penalty meant that Brighton went 3-0 up and up until the last few minutes this looked as it would be the only way Brighton would score with some good defensive work from 1-15. With only a few minutes left though and chasing the game Brighton managed to shift the ball wide and score in the corner to take it to 8-0 and the final minutes brought about the much needed dynamism in the attack although it didn’t bring a comeback, it did give a lift for the squad for the next game in the Plate. The Plate competition saw us coming up against King Edwards, Taunton. The Old Hymerians side had too much power for the Somerset School and ran out comfortable winners In the end.

The 1/4 final brought up the formidable Millfield School Old Boys team. The size of the Old Hymerian side in particular Daniel Doris had some of the Millfield players asking a few of the other Hymers players "what do you feed him up North?” and it showed in the opening 15 minutes as the Old Hymerian side went into half time 8-0 up thanks to a penalty and unconverted try scored by Chris Blucke. With the Millfield pack losing their props to injuries the scrums went to uncontested and all impetus was lost and the physicallity in the attack dropped off. Defensively again, knocking countless Millfield players backwards ended in avail as a penalty and a unconverted Millfield try took the game into extra time where a penalty in the 2nd period ended the Old Hymerians day.

The squad for the tournament was: Daniel Doris, Patrick Carty, Henry Furbank, Ben Davis-Rice, Steve Quigley*, Rob Marson*, Johny Ohikere, Callum Campbell, Tom Schofield, Alex Campbell ©, Ben Wilson, Ben Dorrington*, Anthony Maka*, Chris Blucke, Edward West, Ben Vickers, Reginald Port.

The Man of the Day award went to Regi Port.
