Two Old Hymerians visited Hymers last week and spoke at the Senior School assembly. Martin Hall, a former President of the Old Hymerians Association spoke about how well the Old Hymerian team did at the recent London Triathlon and as a result raised £1400 for the charity Help the Heroes. The cheque was presented to Major General Binns, also an Old Hymerian, on behalf of the charity. In 1994, Major General Binns was awarded the Military Cross for service in the former Republic of Yugoslavia and in 2002 he was appointed a Commander of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, also for services in Yugoslavia. In 2003, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for service in Iraq, where one of his duties had been to sign a Memorandum of Understanding that gave the responsibility for running the province of Basra back to local Iraqi leaders.
