Mr John Kittmer (at Hymers 1978 – 1985) has recently been appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic.

In commenting on his appointment to Athens, John said: "This appointment is a great privilege for me. My love of Greece and the Greek language goes back many years to my schooldays and my subsequent study of classics at university.’

John was taught Ancient Greek at Hymers by Gerald Thompson and Larry Trewartha. Gerald, who is approaching his 80th year, is also now a ‘neighbour’ of John’s as they both live on the lovely Greek Island of Aegina.

‘I owe them a great deal, and am very proud of the education they gave me,’ said John.

From Hymers John went on to study Classics at Cambridge and Oxford universities and Modern Greek Studies at King’s College. Prior to his appointment our ambassador has divided his career between the FCO and other Government departments, working on a range of domestic, international and EU policies.

He has served in the UK Representation to the EU in Brussels, and in various postings in London, including for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Cabinet Office and the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.
