Friday 23rd November 2018 saw Old Hymerian, Kieran Schellingerhout (at Hymers 2006-2016), formally receive the coveted “Green Beret” as he begins his journey as a Royal Marines Commando.

His parents commented to The Headmaster,
“That beret has been earned with blood, lots of sweat and quite a few tears. The training is unrelenting and very, very hard, which only makes that Green Beret all the more precious. You, and your staff, no doubt played your part during his time at Hymers in equipping him for such an endeavor.”

Kieran also received the Charnock Trophy for being Top Marksman, he commented the formal ceremony was “the proudest day of his life”.

We are incredibly proud of Kieran and wish him all the best for the future.

This is indeed a tremendous achievement providing Kieran with a lifetime's self assurance. I suspect he would have felt capable of walking through a concrete wall a day after receiving his Green Beret (but not straight after the 30 miler!) No doubt like his parents, we also received reports after each week of its rigours. Our own son from a South London school passed the 8 week All Arms Commando course following receipt of an SSLC to his school's amazement in 1992 - fifty years after I left Hymers. As a Captain of Shooting and Under Officer in the CCF, I can only take my hat of to both of them.
