Grafton Morrish Qualifier on 12th May 2019

For only the third time in the last eleven years, the Old Hymerians scratch golf team failed to qualify for the national finals of the Grafton Morrish Trophy.

Played at the magnificent Huddersfield Golf Club, only eight schools entered the northern qualifier on 12th May. Strangely this actually made qualification harder, as some of the traditionally weaker schools failed to field a team.

Richard Youden flew in from the USA to partner Tim Atkin in the top pairing. They duly delivered a ‘blob-free’ 28 stableford points around the hilly Fixby course. Sadly, the other two pairs of Matthew Limb and Dave Page and captain Jonathan Clark and Ian Jones couldn’t get anywhere near that sort of score and a team total of 66 points left Hymers seven short of the required number.

Sedbergh won on the day with an immense 94 points, followed by Birkenhead, Ampleforth and Bury. Hymers tied 5th with Bolton.
