Around 20 Old Hymerians met at Hull Golf Club on 26 June 2019 for the annual summer fixture playing for the four golf trophies. On a warm evening on the immaculate Kirk Ella layout, the flags were tricky and the greens were subtle if not slick leading to only two nett scores under par.

Allan Craig retained the Veterans Trophy (over 65) with an excellent 35 points, just one clear of Bruce Wilkie. There was a much clearer winner in division 2 (18-28 handicap) as Keith Allison claimed the Palmer Trophy with a best of the day 41 points – seven clear of Peter Owst in second.

In the first division (scr-18), Alex Limb returned from his studies in Edinburgh to play in the competition for the first time and took the Chambers Cup with 35 points. This edged out OH President Jonathan Leafe, another event debutant, by one point.

Alex’s gross 76 was only good enough for second place in the Scratch Cup as father Matthew ensured the family bragging rights with a superb 73.

Organiser John Canby was again slightly disappointed by the turn out, but was encouraged by some new faces, especially the relative youngsters Alex Limb and Dan Leather.

To catch up with other Old Hymerians on a quality golf course followed by Hull’s famous fish and chips should be drawing more numbers!! Dates of future events will appear on the OH website. Anyone interested in playing should contact John on (01482) 633302 or at jcanby@jcanby.karoo.co.uk
